This week we South African’s commemorate Youth day on the 16th of June – a symbolic day of heroes and heroines that molded a change in the course of our history.Youth Day is also a named holiday of significance that is observed by 19 other countries, on various dates throughout the year – each with their own specific historical catalytic events.

With our focus this month on youth and being younger, it is true:

“Youth is not a time of life, it is a STATE OF MIND.

Youth normally refers to how you look; it’s a reference to your body, your appearance, freshness, vigour, spirit, naivety, activity, innocence, action, change etc.

“Youthfulness” on the other hand is a reference to your “life energy”—a much nicer and mindful goal to strive for.

Many of us are looking for ways to stay young and although you can’t stop the physical clock, you can activate a change of the cognitive signs of ageing and the ageing process with a few mindful and wise moves.

Truth be told, implementing anti-aging techniques into your routine is nothing but a “SELF-CARE” adventure.

Staying youthful is easy and you don’t need to go under the knife or have injections or infusions for the effect. Heck, you don’t even have to leave the house. You have just to explore and enjoy these simple-and -much-more-magical-than-rat-tail-things.

1. PLAY – Play (known as that thing you used to do in your youth) means you’re having “FUN”. It’s the polar opposite of work.

Somewhere on the path to obtaining a career and “growing up” we forget that.

SO, what does it mean to play? It is:

“To engage in a “light-hearted” way, to discover and explore without expectation or an outcome”.

Do you do anything FUN with your time?

When’s the last time you discovered or did something new?

When did you do something without trying to get some kind of end result from it, just for kicks?

If you’re drawing a blank or saying, let me think, then it is time to sign up for that Scuba Diving Course or yes, join an Art Class, Drumming Group, Chocolate sculpting class …Knitting group (knitting can be fun.) Go jumping on a jumping castle – just for fun. FUN is the process.

It has nothing to do with the outcome. PLAY. DISCOVER. EXPLORE.

Stop taking yourself so seriously and Ensure lasting happiness by Becoming a child again. Play and have fun, plain and simple.

2. DESIRE, Yes, that strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen.

This word may initially conjure up images of lustful events like in a movie, it is in fact the energy of craving something that propels us forward. This is what makes us want to stick around to see what happens next.

NURTURE your desires. They serve as the catalyst which continuously launches you into life.

When you wake up in the morning ask yourself: How can I satisfy one of my own desires today?

In your day or night make sure to add at least one thing that you consciously wish to do because you can enjoy it. It doesn’t need to be earth shattering, just something that sparks the desire of your soul.

Take 5 minutes in a quiet space to meditate, enjoy a long bubble bath, have coffee and chocolate cake with a friend or write a poem.

The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who… looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space… on the infinite highway of the air. Wilbur Wright
